The procedure and etiquette of relieving oneself

The words to say, the order of cleaning, forbidden places to relieve oneself, and the acts disliked while doing so.

Islam teaches good manners for using the toilet, from before you go in to after you come out.

Before you go in

  1. Go to the toilet, or somewhere private and out of sight if you are outside.
  2. Take stones or something to clean with, if you need to.
  3. Do not bring in anything with Allah's name, the Prophet's ﷺ name, or Quran on it.
  4. Do not go in with your head uncovered.
  5. Say the dua at the door, then step in with your left foot first.
Say this before going in

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَ الْخَبَائِثِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina'l-khubuthi wa'l-khabāʾith

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male devils and female devils.

While you are in there

  1. Only uncover as much of yourself as you need to.
  2. Do not face the qiblah, and do not turn your back to it either.
  3. Do not talk, and do not recite anything.
  4. Do not spit, blow your nose, or look around more than you need to.
  5. Be as quick as you can.
Say this after coming out

غُفْرَانَكَ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الْاَذٰى وَ عَافَانِيْ

Ghufrānaka'l-ḥamdu lillāhi'lladhī adhhaba ʿannī'l-adhā wa ʿāfānī

I seek Your forgiveness. All praise is for Allah, who removed harm from me and kept me well.

When someone needs to relieve themselves, they should go to a designated toilet or, in open country, move far enough away to be out of sight. They should take stones or other cleaning material with them, and avoid carrying anything inscribed with the name of Allah, the Messenger ﷺ, or Quranic verses. They should not enter bareheaded.

On entering

  1. Recite the dua upon reaching the door.
  2. Enter with the left foot first.
  3. Uncover only as much of the body as is actually needed, and only once about to sit.
  4. Sit with the feet slightly apart, leaning on the left foot.
  5. Avoid facing the qiblah or turning the back towards it.
  6. Keep the mind on the task, and avoid any religious conversation or discussion.

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina'l-khubuthi wa'l-khabāʾith

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male devils and female devils.
