Leaving home for Hajj
The recommended prayers, supplications and farewells for the moment of leaving home on the journey of Hajj.
When a pilgrim finally leaves home, they should feel like they are setting out for the next life, not just for a trip. Before stepping outside, it is recommended to give charity to seven poor people and pray two rak'ahs, reciting Surah al-Kafirun in the first and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second.
اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ الۡخَلِيۡفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَ الْمَالِ وَ الْوَلَدِ وَ الْأَصْحَابِ وَالۡإِخْوَانِ اِحْفَظْنَا وَ إِيَّاهُمۡ مِنْ كُلِّ اٰفَةٍ وَ عَاهَةٍ
Allāhumma anta'ṣ-ṣāḥibu fi's-safari wa'l-khalīfatu fi'l-ahli wa'l-māli wa'l-waladi wa'l-aṣḥābi wa'l-ikhwāni, iḥfaẓnā wa iyyāhum min kulli āfatin wa ʿāhah
O Allah! You are the companion in travel and the guardian of my family, wealth, children, friends, and brothers. Protect us and them from every calamity and harm.
Before leaving home for Hajj it is recommended to give charity to seven poor people and to pray two rak'ahs, reciting Surah al-Kafirun in the first and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second, then to make the dua asking Allah to be your companion on the journey and the guardian of your family and wealth.
1بسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillāhi tawakkaltu ʿala'llāhi, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi'llāh
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
On stepping out of the house it is recommended to say the dua 'In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no power and no strength except with Allah', since the Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it is told he has been guided and protected, and the devils move away from him.
123أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكُمْ وَإِيمَانَكُمْ وَخَوَاتِيمَ أَعْمَالِكُمْ
Astawdiʿu'llāha dīnakum wa īmānakum wa khawātima aʿmālikum
I entrust to Allah your religion, your faith, and the outcomes of your actions.
فِي حِفْظِ اللَّهِ وَ كَنۡفِهٖ زَوَّدَكَ اللهُ التَّقْوٰى وَ جَنَّبَكَ عَنِ الرَّدٰى
Fī ḥifẓi'llāhi wa kanafihī, zawwadaka'llāhu't-taqwā wa jannabaka ʿani'r-radā
May you remain under Allah's protection and care. May Allah grant you the provision of piety and protect you from destruction.
Before setting off it is recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Ikhlas and the last two surahs, to give charity to seven poor people again, and to say goodbye with the words entrusting each other's religion and faith to Allah, while those staying behind pray for the traveller to have piety and a safe journey.

Giving charity to seven needy people and praying two rak'ahs of nafl before leaving the house, with Surat al-Kafirun in the first and Surat al-Ikhlas in the second, followed by the du'a asking Allah to be the companion in travel and the guardian of family, wealth and children, is recommended (mustahabb), and one sets out with the mindset of a journey to the Hereafter.
1On reaching the doorstep, Surat al-Qadr is recited, along with this du'a:
بسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ عَلٰى نَفْسِي وَ مَالِي وَدِينِيۡ اَللّٰهُمَّ بِكَ انْــتَـــشَرۡتُ وَ إِلَيْكَ تَوَجَّهْتُ وَ بِكَ اعْتَصَمْتُ وَ عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّـلْتُ اَللّٰهُمَّ زَوِّدۡنِي التَّقْوٰى وَ اغْفِرۡ لِي ذُنُو بِـي وَ وَجِّهْنِي لِلْخَيْرَاتِ أَيْنَمَا تَوَجَّهْتُ
Bismillāhi tawakkaltu ʿala'llāhi, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi'llāh, bismillāhi ʿalā nafsī wa mālī wa dīnī, allāhumma bika'ntashartu wa ilayka tawajjahtu wa bika'ʿtaṣamtu wa ʿalayka tawakkaltu, allāhumma zawwidnī't-taqwā wa'ghfir lī dhunūbī wa wajjihnī li'l-khayrāti aynamā tawajjaht
I begin this journey with the name of Allah; I place my trust in Him. There is no power or strength except with Allah. In the name of Allah, I entrust my life, wealth, and religion to Him. O Allah! With Your help, I set off. I turn to You for support, rely on You, and trust You. O Allah! Grant me piety, forgive my sins, and guide me to goodness wherever I turn.
On stepping outside, this du'a is recited:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّـيۡ اَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ اَللّٰهُمَّ وَفِّقْنِي لِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضٰى وَ اعْصِمۡنِي مِنَ الشَّيْطٰنِ الرَّجِیمِ
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min an aḍilla aw uḍalla aw aẓlima aw uẓlama aw ajhala aw yujhala ʿalayya, bismillāhi tawakkaltu ʿala'llāhi, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi'llāhi'l-ʿaliyyi'l-ʿaẓīm, allāhumma waffiqnī li-mā tuḥibbu wa tarḍā wa aʿṣimnī mina'sh-shayṭāni'r-rajīm
O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or causing others to go astray, from committing wrongdoing or being wronged, from ignorance or being subjected to ignorance. In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. O Allah, grant me success in what You love and are pleased with, and protect me from the accursed Shaytan.
Reciting the transmitted du'as at the doorstep and on stepping outside is recommended (mustahabb), above all the words 'In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah; there is no power or strength except with Allah', of which the Prophet ﷺ said the one who says them is told he has been guided, protected and guarded, and the devils withdraw from him. The Prophet ﷺ himself sought refuge, when he travelled, from the hardships of the journey and from harm to family and wealth.
123Afterwards, it is recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi, Surat al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhatan (Surahs al-Falaq and an-Nas), give charity to seven poor people again, and bid farewell, saying:
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكُمْ وَإِيمَانَكُمْ وَخَوَاتِيمَ أَعْمَالِكُمْ
Astawdiʿu'llāha dīnakum wa īmānakum wa khawātima aʿmālikum
I entrust to Allah your religion, your faith, and the outcomes of your actions.
فِي حِفْظِ اللَّهِ وَ كَنۡفِهٖ زَوَّدَكَ اللهُ التَّقْوٰى وَ جَنَّبَكَ عَنِ الرَّدٰى
Fī ḥifẓi'llāhi wa kanafihī, zawwadaka'llāhu't-taqwā wa jannabaka ʿani'r-radā
May you remain under Allah's protection and care. May Allah grant you the provision of piety and protect you from destruction.
Reciting Ayat al-Kursi, Surat al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhatan, giving charity to seven poor people once more, and exchanging the transmitted words of farewell, the traveller entrusting to Allah the religion and faith of those he leaves and they praying for his piety and protection, is recommended (mustahabb). This follows the Prophet's ﷺ counsel to the traveller to hold to piety, and his own prayer that the journey be shortened and made easy.
1When boarding a boat or ship, two verses are recited:
وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللّٰهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهٖࣗۖ وَالْاَرْضُ جَمِيْعًا قَبْضَتُهٗ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ وَالسَّمٰوٰتُ مَطْوِيّٰتٌۢ بِيَمِيْنِهٖؕ سُبْحٰنَهٗ وَتَعٰلٰي عَمَّا يُشْرِكُوْنَ ٦٧
Bismillāh, wa mā qadaru'llāha ḥaqqa qadrihī wa'l-arḍu jamīʿan qabḍatuhū yawma'l-qiyāmati wa'-samāwātu maṭwiyyātun bi-yamīnihī, subḥānahū wa taʿālā ʿammā yushrikūn
And "they esteemed not Allah as was due to Him and He will roll up the. Entire earth on the Day of Judgement and all the heavens shall be rolled up by His Authority. And He is Sanctified and Exalted from their association.

Bismillāhi majrehā wa mursāhā inna rabbī la-ghafūrun raḥīm
And he said, 'embark therein; in the name of Allah is its moving and its berthing. No doubt, my Lord is assuredly Forgiving, Merciful.

It is mustahabb, before leaving the house, to give sadaqah to seven needy people and to pray two rak'ahs of nafl with Surat al-Kafirun and Surat al-Ikhlas, then to recite the transmitted du'a that Allah be the companion (sahib) in travel and the guardian (khalifah) over family, wealth and children; nothing better is left behind with one's family than these two rak'ahs.

The du'as of the doorstep and of stepping outside are mustahabb: the core formula 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu ala Allah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' carries the promise that its speaker is guided, sufficed and protected and that the shayatin withdraw from him. The seeking of refuge from the hardship of travel, from a gloomy return, from the supplication of the wronged and from evil in family and wealth, and the takbir and du'a on mounting, are likewise the Prophet's ﷺ transmitted practice on setting out.
123Afterwards, it is recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi, Surat al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhatan (Surahs al-Falaq and an-Nas), give charity to seven poor people again, and bid farewell, saying:

It is mustahabb before departure to recite Ayat al-Kursi, Surat al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhatan, to give sadaqah again to seven needy people, and to exchange the transmitted farewell (wada): the traveller says 'astawdi'u Allaha dinakum wa amanatakum wa khawatima a'malikum' and those remaining reply with the prayer for taqwa as provision and protection from harm. The Prophet ﷺ advised the departing traveller to hold to taqwa and to say the takbir on every rise, and prayed that his distance be shortened and his journey eased.

Account of the Journey of Hajj and Departure from One’s Homeland
When leaving home, do so with the mindset that you are leaving for the hereafter rather than just going on a worldly journey. Before leaving your house, give charity to seven needy people and offer two rakats of Nafl prayer. In the first rak'ah, recite "قُلْ يٰٓأَيُّهَا الْكٰفِرُونَ", and in the second rak'ah, recite "قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ". After completing the prayer, recite the following dua:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ الۡخَلِيۡفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَ الْمَالِ وَ الْوَلَدِ وَ الْأَصْحَابِ وَالۡإِخْوَانِ اِحْفَظْنَا وَ إِيَّاهُمۡ مِنْ كُلِّ اٰفَةٍ وَ عَاهَةٍ
Translation: O Allah! You are the companion in travel and the guardian of my family, wealth, children, friends, and brothers. Protect us and them from every calamity and harm.
When you reach the doorstep, recite Surah "إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلْنَاهُ" and say the following dua:

When stepping outside, recite this dua:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّـيۡ اَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ اَللّٰهُمَّ وَفِّقْنِي لِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضٰى وَ اعْصِمۡنِي مِنَ الشَّيْطٰنِ الرَّجِیمِ

Afterward, recite Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Ikhlas, and the Mu'awwidhat (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas), then give some charity to seven poor people. Bid farewell to everyone and make dua, Saying:
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكُمْ وَإِيمَانَكُمْ وَخَوَاتِيمَ أَعْمَالِكُمْ
Translation: I entrust to Allah your religion, your faith, and the outcomes of your actions.
Those bidding you farewell should say:
فِي حِفْظِ اللَّهِ وَ كَنۡفِهٖ زَوَّدَكَ اللهُ التَّقْوٰى وَ جَنَّبَكَ عَنِ الرَّدٰى
Translation: May you remain under Allah's protection and care. May Allah grant you the provision of piety and protect you from destruction.
When boarding a boat or ship, recite:
بسْمِ اللَّهِ وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهٖ وَ الْأَرْضُ جَمِيعًا قَبْضَتُهٗ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ وَ السَّمٰوٰتُ مَطْوِيّٰتٌ م بِيَمِينِهٖ سُبْحٰنَهٗ وَ تَعٰلٰى عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
(Az-Zumar - 39:27)
Translation: In the name of Allah, I embark upon this journey. They did not give Allah His due right, and the whole earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مَجْرٖهَا وَمُرْسٰهَا إِنَّ رَبّـِي لَـغَــفُــورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
(Hud - 11:41)
Translation: In the name of Allah, the ship moves and halts. Indeed, my Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
