The Day of Tarwiyah: entering ihram for Hajj and going to Mina

How Hajj begins on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah: entering ihram, Tawaf al-Qudum, travelling to Mina, and spending the night there.

If someone from outside Makkah is only doing Hajj (not Umrah first), they tie their ihram at the miqat the same way as before. On the 7th of Dhul-Hijjah, after Dhuhr prayer, everyone listens to a sermon in the Grand Mosque explaining the rites of Hajj.

The 8th of Dhul-Hijjah: the Day of Tarwiyah

  1. After Fajr prayer, put on ihram for Hajj if you have not already.
  2. It is best to do a voluntary tawaf of the Kaʿbah first, before setting off.
  3. Travel to Mina together with the Imam and the other pilgrims.
  4. Stay near Masjid al-Khayf if you can, or set up anywhere along the way.
  5. Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr there, each at its own time: five prayers in total, not combined.
  6. Spend the night saying the Talbiyah, making dua, and asking Allah's forgiveness.

Subḥāna'lladhī fi's-samā'i ʿarshuh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'l-arḍi mawṭi'uh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'l-baḥri sabīluh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'n-nāri sulṭānuh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'l-jannati raḥmatuh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'l-qabri qaḍā'uh, subḥāna'lladhī fi'l-hawā'i rūḥuh, subḥāna'lladhī rafaʿa's-samā'a, subḥāna'lladhī waḍaʿa'l-arḍ, lā malja'a wa lā manjā minhu illā ilayh.

Glory be to the One whose Throne is in the heavens. Glory be to the One whose resting place is on earth. Glory be to the One whose path is in the sea. Glory be to the One whose authority is in the fire. Glory be to the One whose mercy is in Paradise. Glory be to the One whose decree is in the grave. Glory be to the One whose mercy is in the air. Glory be to the One who raised the heavens. Glory be to the One who laid the earth. There is no refuge or escape from Him except to Him.

A pilgrim from outside the Haram area (an Afaqi) intending Hajj alone ties ihram at the miqat as described earlier. On the 7th of Dhul-Hijjah, after Dhuhr, the Imam of Masjid al-Haram delivers a sermon explaining the rites ahead; it is necessary to listen to it.

The 8th of Dhul-Hijjah: the Day of Tarwiyah

  1. After Fajr, enter ihram for Hajj, whether a local resident or someone from outside Makkah.
  2. It is best to enter ihram after performing a voluntary tawaf of Makkah. If saʿy is to follow this tawaf, perform Idtiba and Ramal in it; if saʿy is being deferred to after Tawaf al-Ziyarah, do not perform them here.
  3. Set off for Mina together with the Imam and the rest of the pilgrims.
  4. On arrival, stay near Masjid al-Khayf if possible, or camp anywhere along the route where space allows.
  5. Pray the five prayers from Dhuhr to the following Fajr there, each at its proper time and not combined.
  6. Spend the night occupied with Talbiyah, dua and istighfar.

The Āfāqī intending Ḥajj alone (Ifrād) ties iḥrām at the mīqāt as already described. On the 7th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, after Ẓuhr, the Imam of Masjid al-Ḥarām delivers a single khuṭbah, without a sitting between two parts, explaining the rites to come; attendance is necessary.

The 8th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah: Yawm al-Tarwiyah

  1. After Fajr, iḥrām for Ḥajj is assumed, by resident and non-resident alike.
  2. A nafl ṭawāf of Makkah before assuming iḥrām is preferable. Where saʿy will follow this ṭawāf, iḍṭibāʿ and ramal are performed in it; where saʿy is deferred until after Tawaf al-Ziyārah, neither is performed here.
  3. Departure for Minā follows, together with the Imam and the body of pilgrims.
  4. Lodging is taken near Masjid al-Khayf where possible, named for the slope (khayf) at the foot of which it stands at the edge of Minā, or anywhere along the route where space is found.
  5. The five prayers from Ẓuhr to the following Fajr are prayed there, uncombined, each within its own time.
  6. The night is spent in Talbiyah, duʿā and istighfār.
Sunnahthe Prophet’s way

Talbiyah continues through Tawaf al-Qudūm rather than being permanently discontinued, as it is at the single tawaf of ʿUmrah; it is only finally silenced at the first pebble cast at Jamrat al-ʿAqabah on the 10th. A pilgrim whose saʿy is deferred until after Tawaf al-Ziyārah accordingly recites no Talbiyah during that saʿy, since Talbiyah has, by that point, already ended.
