When wudu is fard, wajib, sunnah or mustahabb

The occasions on which wudu is obligatory, necessary before an act, recommended, or simply preferable.

Wudu is needed at different times, and for different reasons.

Farḍmust do

Wudu is fard (a must) before you pray (for the five daily prayers, extra prayers, the funeral prayer, and a prostration of recitation) and before touching the Qur'an itself without a cover over it.

Wājibmust do

Wudu is wajib (necessary) before doing Tawaf, walking around the Kaaba.

Sunnahthe Prophet’s way

It is sunnah to already have wudu before taking a full bath (ghusl).

Good times to make wudu (mustahabb)

  1. Before the call to prayer (adhan) and the call to stand for prayer (iqamah), and before a sermon (khutbah).
  2. When you touch Islamic books, or before visiting the Prophet's ﷺ blessed resting place.
  3. After washing someone who has died.
  4. For a woman who cannot pray because of her monthly bleeding or bleeding after childbirth, before each prayer time.
  5. Before eating or drinking, if you need to take a full bath (ghusl).
  6. Before sleeping, and when you wake up.
  7. Before every prayer, for extra reward, even if you already have wudu.

Wudu is required at different strengths, depending on the occasion.

Farḍmust do

Wudu is fard for performing prayer (whether obligatory, voluntary, the funeral prayer, or a prostration of recitation) and for touching the Qur'an directly without a cover.
