The command to pray, and who it is obligatory on

Salah is individually obligatory on every sane, mature Muslim, and the conditions that make it obligatory on a given person.

Farḍmust do

Prayer is obligatory, called fard-e-ayn, five times every day on every Muslim boy or girl who has grown up and can think clearly.

Prayer becomes something you must do once four things are true for you:

When prayer becomes obligatory on a person

  1. You are a Muslim.
  2. You have grown up (reached the age called baligh).
  3. You can think clearly (you are of sound mind).
  4. The time for that prayer has started.For a girl or woman, she must also not be bleeding from her monthly period or from childbirth.

Prayer is obligatory (fard-e-ayn) five times daily on every Muslim who is of sound mind and has reached the age of maturity, whether male or female.

The conditions that make prayer obligatory on a particular person are:

Conditions for prayer being obligatory

  1. Being Muslim.
  2. Being mature (baligh).
  3. Having a sound mind (aql).
  4. The time for the prayer has arrived.In addition, a woman must be free from menstruation and postnatal bleeding for that prayer to be obligatory on her.

Prayer is farḍ al-ʿayn, individually obligatory, five times daily on every Muslim of sound mind (ʿaql) who has reached bulūgh, male or female alike.

The conditions of wujūb (the conditions whose presence makes prayer obligatory on a given person, as distinct from the conditions of ṣiḥḥah that make a prayer, once undertaken, valid) are four:

  1. Islam.
  2. Bulūgh (legal maturity).
  3. ʿAql (a sound, functioning mind).
  4. The entry of the prayer's time.For a woman, this condition additionally requires that she be free of ḥayḍ (menstruation) and nifās (post-natal bleeding); prayer is not obligatory on her, and is not to be made up, for the period in which either applies.
