Joining a congregation that has already begun
When to break off a prayer you started alone to join the jama'ah, when a sunnah must be finished first, and how catching the ruku' counts as catching the rak'ah.
Sometimes you start praying by yourself, and then the congregation (jama'ah) begins. Here is what to do.
If you are praying a fard prayer alone
- If the congregation starts before you have gone down for the second sajdah of the second rak'ah (in Fajr or Maghrib), or the first or third sajdah (in Zuhr, Asr or Isha), stop your prayer and join the congregation.
- But if you have already reached that sajdah, finish your prayer by yourself first. Then you can join the congregation afterwards (it will count as nafl for you).
You must never break off a sunnah or nafl prayer just because the fard congregation has started, even if you have not yet gone down for the first sajdah. Finish it, then join the congregation.
Once the fard congregation has started, do not begin a new sunnah or nafl prayer.
Making up a missed Fajr or Zuhr sunnah
- If you missed the Fajr sunnah because you joined the fard instead, you can still pray it after the fard, up until midday (zawal).
- If you missed it and didn't pray the fard either, you cannot make it up, not even after midday.
- If you missed the Zuhr sunnah because you joined the congregation or ran out of time, you can make it up after the fard, any time within Zuhr's time, either before or after the two Zuhr sunnahs prayed after the fard.
If someone begins a fard prayer alone and the congregational prayer then starts, they must immediately break off and join the congregation, provided they have not yet performed the second sajdah of the second rak'ah in Fajr or Maghrib, or the first or third sajdah in Zuhr, Asr or Isha. Once that sajdah has been performed, the prayer is instead completed alone, and the congregation is joined afterwards.
A sunnah or nafl prayer already begun is never broken off for the fard congregation, even before the first sajdah. It is completed, and the congregation is joined afterwards. If it was a 4-rak'ah sunnah and only the first two rak'ahs have been prayed, the remaining fard is prayed with the congregation, and the missed sunnah is made up after the fard.
Once the fard congregation is under way, no sunnah or nafl prayer should be started. The Fajr sunnah is an exception: it may still be prayed beforehand provided there is a reasonable hope of joining the imam for the final sitting (qa'dah akhirah). If that hope is not there, the sunnah is left and the congregation is joined instead.
| Situation | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Fajr sunnah missed, fard prayed | Can be made up any time before zawal (midday). |
| Fajr sunnah missed, fard also missed | Cannot be made up at all, not even after zawal. |
| Zuhr sunnah missed by joining the congregation or running out of time | Made up after the fard, any time within Zuhr's time, before or after the after-fard Zuhr sunnahs. |
When joining the congregation, one enters at whatever point the imam has reached, without waiting for a particular action. Catching the ruku' with the imam counts as catching that rak'ah; missing the ruku' means that rak'ah is not counted as joined.
One who has begun a farḍ prayer individually, and for whom the jamāʿah then commences, must break off the individual prayer and join the congregation, on condition that the second sajdah of the second rakʿah has not yet been performed in Fajr or Maghrib, nor the first or third sajdah in Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr or ʿIshāʾ. Once that sajdah is passed, breaking off is no longer permitted; the individual prayer is completed, and the jamāʿah is joined only after completion.
Breaking off a sunnah or nafl already begun is not permitted for the sake of the farḍ jamāʿah, even prior to the first sajdah of the first rakʿah: the prohibition on invalidating a sunnah or nafl once begun overrides the pull of the congregation. It is completed, then the jamāʿah is joined. Where a 4-rakʿah sunnah has reached only its first two rakʿahs, the remaining farḍ is prayed with the imam, and the interrupted sunnah is made up (qaḍāʾ) after the farḍ.
No sunnah or nafl is to be initiated once the farḍ jamāʿah is in progress. The sunnah of Fajr is exempted from this: it may still be begun beforehand where there is ẓann ghālib (a reasonably confident expectation) of catching the imam at the qaʿdah akhīrah; absent that expectation, the sunnah is foregone in favour of the jamāʿah.
| Situation | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Fajr sunnah missed, but the farḍ was prayed | Qaḍāʾ is possible at any point before zawāl (astronomical noon). |
| Fajr sunnah missed, and the farḍ itself missed | No qaḍāʾ at all, not before zawāl, and not after it either. |
| Zuhr sunnah missed through joining the jamāʿah, or through the time running out | Qaḍāʾ after the farḍ, at any point within Ẓuhr's time, before or after the two sunnahs prayed after the farḍ. |
Entry into the jamāʿah is made at whatever point the imam has reached: there is no waiting for a specific act such as a sajdah. Catching the rukūʿ with the imam is sufficient for that rakʿah to be counted as joined (masbūq status for the remainder); missing the rukūʿ means the rakʿah itself is not credited and must be made up individually after the imam's salām.
