The marriage sermon (khutbat an-nikah)

The sermon recommended before the offer and acceptance of nikah, given here in the two forms the source records.

Before a couple say their marriage words, it is recommended that someone recite a short speech first, called the khutbah, praising Allah and reminding everyone to be mindful of Him. It is best if the bride's guardian reads it, as the Prophet ﷺ himself did at his daughter Fatimah's wedding.

The opening of the marriage sermon

Bismillāhi'r-Raḥmāni'r-Raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

A saying of the Prophet ﷺ recited within the sermon

An-nikāḥu min sunnatī, faman raghiba ʿan sunnatī fa laysa minnī

Marriage is from my way of life; whoever turns away from my way is not following me.

The sermon of nikah (khutbat an-nikah) is recommended before the offer and acceptance are exchanged. It is recommended that the bride's guardian himself recite it, as the Prophet ﷺ did at the marriage of his daughter Fatimah az-Zahra, or, failing that, the person conducting the nikah or another righteous man present.

The opening of the first sermon

Bismillāhi'r-Raḥmāni'r-Raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

The first sermon

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi naḥmaduhū wa nastaʿīnuhū wa nastaghfiruh, wa naʿūdhu billāhi min shurūri anfusinā wa min sayyiʾāti aʿmālinā, man yahdihi'llāhu fa lā muḍilla lah, wa man yuḍlilhu fa lā hādiya lah, wa ashhadu an lā ilāha illa'llāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lah, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhū wa rasūluh

All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His help, and we ask His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and from our wicked deeds. Whoever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whoever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.

The additional passage found in some narrations

Arsalahū bi'l-ḥaqqi bashīran wa nadhīran bayna yadayi's-sāʿah. Man yuṭiʿi'llāha wa rasūlahū faqad rashad, wa man yaʿṣihimā fa innahū lā yaḍurru illā nafsahū wa lā yaḍurru'llāha shayʾā. Wa nasʾalu'llāha an yajʿalanā mimman yuṭīʿuhū wa yuṭīʿu rasūlah, wa yattabiʿu riḍwānahū wa yajtanibu sakhaṭah, fa innamā naḥnu bihī wa lah

He sent him with the truth, as a bringer of good news and a warner before the coming of the Hour. Whoever obeys Allah and His messenger is rightly guided, and whoever disobeys them harms only himself and does not harm Allah in the least. We ask Allah to make us among those who obey Him and obey His messenger, who follow His pleasure and avoid His displeasure, for we exist through Him and for Him.

The three Qur'anic verses recited within the sermon

Yā ayyuha'n-nāsu'ttaqū rabbakumu'lladhī khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wa khalaqa minhā zawjahā wa baththa minhumā rijālan kathīran wa nisāʾā, wa'ttaqu'llāha'lladhī tasāʾalūna bihī wa'l-arḥām, inna'llāha kāna ʿalaykum raqībā. O mankind, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, created from it its mate, and spread from the two of them many men and women. Be mindful of Allah, in whose name you ask one another for your rights, and of family ties; Allah is ever watchful over you. O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon his family, his companions, his wives, his descendants and the people of his household, and grant abundant peace.

The second sermon

Praise belongs to Allah, praised for His favour, worshipped for His power, obeyed for His authority, feared for His punishment and His might, whose command runs through His heaven and His earth; who created creation by His power, commanded them by His rulings, honoured them by His religion, and ennobled them by His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah, Most High, blessed is His name and exalted is His majesty, made kinship by marriage a binding cause and an obligatory matter, by which He drew together the ties of family and bound mankind. For He, Mighty is His word, has said: 'And it is He who created a human being from water and gave him lineage and marriage-kinship; and your Lord is ever able to do as He wills.' The command of Allah, Most High, proceeds to His decree, and His decree proceeds to His measure; every decree has a measure, every measure has a term, and every term is written down. Allah erases what He wills and confirms what He wills, and with Him is the source of the Book.

Khutbat an-nikah is mustahabb before the ijab and qubul are exchanged; it is mustahabb that the bride's wali recite it himself, as the Prophet ﷺ did at the nikah of Fatimah az-Zahra (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā), failing which, the officiant or another salih man present. Reciting it is mustahabb, but silent attention to it is wajib on all present. Its content should include hamd of Allah, salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, the shahadatayn, ayat of the Qur'an, and exhortation to taqwa, obedience, and fidelity to one's commitments, nikah itself falling under the category of ʿuhud (covenants). It is preferable that the khutbah be one transmitted in the hadith; the source records two such forms.

The opening of the first sermon

The hadith and blessings recited with the second sermon

Wa qāla rasūlu'llāhi ṣalla'llāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam: An-nikāḥu min sunnatī, faman raghiba ʿan sunnatī fa laysa minnī. Wa qāla: Tazawwaju'l-wadūda'l-walūda fa innī mubāhin bikumu'l-umam. Wa qāla: Ad-dunyā kulluhā matāʿun wa khayru matāʿi'd-dunyā al-marʾatu'ṣ-ṣāliḥah. Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadini'n-nabiyyi'l-ummiyyi wa ʿalā ālihī wa aṣḥābihī wa azwājihī wa dhurriyyātihī wa ahli baytihī wa sallam taslīman kathīran kathīrā

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Marriage is from my sunnah; whoever turns away from my sunnah is not of me.' And he said: 'Marry the loving and the fertile, for I will boast of your numbers before the other nations.' And he said: 'The whole world is a provision, and the best provision of the world is a righteous woman.' O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon his family, his companions, his wives, his descendants and the people of his household, and grant abundant peace.
