Forty hadith to memorise

40 sayings of the Prophet ﷺ, each a single sentence, chosen so that a child or a beginner can learn them by heart: the collection Memorizing 40 Hadith (أربعون حديثًا للحفظ) on Zujajah.org, in Arabic, English and Urdu, every one traced to its source.

Why memorise forty hadith

Learning the Prophet's ﷺ words by heart is how they were carried for the first generations, and the hadith give it a reward of its own. The best known is the promise made to whoever preserves forty of them for the community:

The reward of memorising forty hadith

It is narrated from Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the most beloved type of knowledge that when a person attains it, he becomes a scholar?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied: "Whoever memorizes forty hadiths from my ummah regarding their religious matters, Allah will raise him as a scholar, and I will be his intercessor and witness on the Day of Judgment."

Zujājat al-Maṣābīḥ 242, on Zujajah.org

The scholars of hadith note that this saying reaches the Prophet ﷺ through chains that are weak on their own; Imam an-Nawawi, who opened his own Forty with it, wrote that they accepted acting on it because it concerns the virtue of a deed, not a ruling, and because the whole community of scholars has compiled forties on its strength. Two sound hadith carry the same encouragement:

The one who hears, memorises and conveys

It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "May Allah brighten the face of a servant who hears my words, memorizes them, and conveys them. Perhaps a person who carries knowledge is not a scholar, and perhaps a person who carries knowledge to one who is more learned than him. There are three things upon which the heart of a Muslim does not harbor malice: sincerity of action for Allah, giving sincere advice to the Muslims, and adhering to their community, for their call surrounds them." [Narrated by Al-Shafi'i and Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Madkhal, and by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah, and Al-Darimi from Zaid ibn Thabit, although Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood did not mention "three things upon which..."]

Convey from me, even one verse

Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Convey from me, even if it is a single verse, and narrate from the Children of Israel without any harm. But whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire." [Narrated by Bukhari]

So a child who learns these forty sentences, and can say where each comes from, carries a small share of the Prophet's ﷺ words and the reward of passing them on. Each saying below is short enough to learn in a day. Learn the Arabic first, then its meaning, and tick it off as you go.
